FRANKY VAN DER ELST - Biography
Franky Van der Elst, born April 30, 1961, in Opwijk, Belgium, is a former footballer and coach. He played as a midfielder, beginning his professional career in 1978 with RWD Molenbeek. In 1982, he received his first call-up to the Belgian national team. He transferred to Club Brugge in 1984, remaining there until his retirement in 1999. Van der Elst won the Belgian Golden Shoe twice, in 1990 and 1996. He made 86 appearances for the Belgian national team, participating in the 1986, 1990, 1994, and 1998 World Cups. After retiring, he coached Germinal Beerschot and Lokeren. In 2005, he returned to Club Brugge as an assistant coach. He later served as head coach of Brussels from January to June 2008.
