GORDON BANKS - Biography
Gordon Banks, born December 30, 1937, in Sheffield, was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Banks was a key figure in England's 1966 World Cup victory. He held the record for the longest unbeaten run by an English goalkeeper with 721 consecutive minutes until 2021. Banks is renowned for his save from Pelé's header during the 1970 World Cup, widely regarded as one of the greatest saves in football history. He played for Chesterfield, Leicester City, and Stoke City. Banks made his professional debut for Chesterfield in 1958 and moved to Leicester City in 1959. He played in several cup finals with Leicester, including victories in the League Cup in 1964. Banks joined Stoke City in 1966 and remained with the club until his retirement. He earned 73 caps for the England national team between 1963 and 1972. After his playing career, Banks served as president of Stoke City.
